one of my favourite tv shows! it seems space-outlaws don't do well when it comes to having a long running series though - consider both outlaw star (watch it - it seems to have been the genesis of firefly) and cowboy bebop only ran for a series each (though os was aiming for another run and bebop left on a cliffhanger).
i think with firefly they had low ratings and the plot resolved itself satisfactorally enough to let it be axed.

Love, love this show. It still hurts when I think about what it could have developed into. Joss Whedon is THE best television writer of all time.

There are fourteen episodes, but only eleven of them aired on television. There's also a movie that was based on the series, called "Serenity" after the ship.
