Jason Long - Listen To The Music - Tiran Porter

Uploaded by: JC10255
Video Description:
Transcribed bass line of Tiran Porter off the Doobie Brothers album "Toulouse Street", 1972. Tiran Porter mostly played with a pick, including on this song. I've never attempted to use a pick in my playing, and I'd hate to think of how bad it would turn out if I tried! So here is Tiran Porter's transcription using fingerstyle instead.

Thank you Jason for posting these very detailed videos. As a fellow bassist I find them very educational. You have a great feel and eye for detail. I always thought the bass line to this song was more than it actually is. It is so hard to hear the bass line on older recordings to pick out all the details. Thanks you for making my work on this particular song a lot shorter than it would have been otherwise!!!

Thanks so much! Its great to get this type of feedback. When I first started posting these videos, my initial intention was not necessarily to train folks on how to actually play the lines, but rather to pay tribute to all of the great studio bass players of the past 40+ years who have really gone "unsung" throughout the decades. Although, it is nice to know that folks are actually learning how to play the lines from watching these videos. Thanks once again for your support!

Whatever your intentions were/are - you are nailing this stuff. It's great to see real talent for a change...too much garbage out there pretending to be real music. Speaking of tributes - your gonna think I'm nuts - I've been tinkering with some of Chicago's old stuff (I'm a 40 something beginner) and have found that Peter Cetera actually had some great bass lines going. Who would have thunk it;-)

Its funny you mention Cetera! I've transcribed some of his lines (and also (ironically) some of Jason Scheff's bass lines as well. I think both Cetera and Scheff are great bass players). Look for Cetera's "No Tell Lover" to be posted one of these days. I may even post one of Scheff's live bass lines to "Call On Me" or "Beginnings".

Scheff and Verdin White are on fire on that EWF/Chicago in concert DVD. Especially in the first 3 songs where they are on stage at the same time.
