Lemme ask you this... how can you tell the difference between "damage control" and "correcting the record"? To me, the former implies guilt; the latter implies genuine clarification. The man isn't changing the story... it's just certain points: a *great* uncle instead of an uncle; and Buchenwald not Auschwitz. Are these relevant facts? The point of the story is that he has a personal reference for the suffering of veterans. You're right, should have gotten the facts straight the first time.

This sounds like a fun debate, so here goes: Flag burning is probably the most extreme form of PEACEFUL protest. It does not hurt anyone, and it really shuoldn't effect people as much as it does. Sure, it's extreme, butin a time when shock value is used so much that it is no longer moving, sometimes burning a flag is the only way to get the publics attention. You have no such right if by "my flag" you mean ANY flag sewn in the shape of the flag of the US of A. You DO have such a right if by "my flag" you mean that specific one you bought and fly outside your house. Your property. Bottom-line: I would never do it. I think burning the flag of our country is vile and stupid. But this is a free country; others have the right to do what they want with their copy of the flag. Your rights are not abridged.

I'll remind you that the rule of law in this country DOES care who paid for it. The Constitution of the United States rightly draws no distinction between your ability to express your opinion and for another to protest through flag burning. Belief is what we do in place of knowing. I know that burning our flag is sad and stupid; and I know that it is only a symbol not to be confused with the real thing. Whether you believe it or not, ours is a pluralistic society: "they" are here to stay.
