To think that this was composed by a man that was completely deaf is nothing short of unbelievable. This symphony, in my opinion, is one of the greatest accomplishments, not just musically, in the history of man.

Beethoven did know what the notes sounded like on each instrument before he went deaf. because he had heard them before, he was able to remember the sound after he turned deaf and 'hear' the melody in his head.
