I used to work at Tower Records, and several years ago I was playing Christmas Portrait over the store system. A guy probably in his 50s that was a regular customer came up and told me that he was sent to Vietnam in December, 1970. He said the first time he and his buddies heard it on the radio they all sat there and cried.

This is one of my all time favorite Christmas songs. Karen Carpenter was incredible and she mastered this song. It has a very specail meaning for me this time of year.

I take great comfort and solace in listening to this song, my kid brother passed on tragically in 1970 when this song first came out, everytime I see and hear this beautiful song and Karen's wonderful voice it gives me great comfort in rememberance of him when he was alive, I know his spirit and this song will live on forever.

I had the honour and pleasure of meeting and working with Karen many times (not as a singer). She was as beautiful in the inside as she was out. I know she has touched my heart many times and I am sure many others. If only she wasn't made to be so unsuccessful. I know her parents meant well yet one can push to far, She was never happy with herself and yes you can see the beginnings of the disease on her face and eyes,

I just wish we knew of it. Yet, because of her millions of people are alive and millions more will stay alive as she made us aware of the disease. So Karen is not dead, she is giving the gift of life everyday!

Her beautiful voice coupled with Richard's beautiful arrangements made their sound. He deserves more credit than he gets for creating those beautiful close harmonies, and knowing that well-crafted music would stand the test of time. The harmonies at the end after Karen stops singing are wonderful.
