Restaurant Jezebel Incident Incurs Felony Charge -Sept 6, 07

For months, several Downtown businesses have been targets of animal rights protesters. Police say they're looking for a man "caught in the act" of vandalizing a restaurant.
Restaurant Jezebel serves and sells a delicacy called foie gras. It's made from the livers of geese that are force-fed, and that's why people protest -- proclaiming the delicacy the result of a cruel practice. But police say one man took his fight too far, and now he faces a felony charge. "Thi
s is him during the protest," an investigator told CBS 42's Gregg Watson. "This is him doing the criminal activity." A protester defaced the building when he or she wrote a warning to diners at Jezebel that read: "Spit it out." It's the second time since July the restaurant has been hit by vandals
, upset with them selling foie gras. "They are threatening," says owner Parind Vora. "And not only that, but a lot of our customers have filed complaints with the police department because what they're doing -- they're standing by the door. And as people are trying to walk in, they try to say I'm h
anding them the pamphlet, but they stretch their arms -- so it's like you're going to 'clothesline' somebody." Vora set up surveillance after the last attack, and police say the suspect's name is Josh Rosenberg. Parind says Rosenberg cut the power, not knowing the camera runs on a back-up battery.
"Cutting the power," Vora said. "I mean those are all big deals. This is not something normal people do." The first time Jezebel was targeted, someone posted pictures online. Police say they traced the registered owner of the web site to Rosenberg. "Prior incidents, I guess, have been posted to
this web site as well as pictures," says Detective James Mason Austin Police Department. "And the detective was able to use that as a tool during his investigation to place an arrest warrant on the suspect." Despite the damage, meals are still prepared and tables still set. They say dinner will be
served, and they hope justice will be too.
