As a matter of fact if you not consider the military roads one would have to be a pro-Alpinist to go over the Caucasus. in winter it is nearly impenetrable from the north because of the snow. If Georgia had planned it, Georgia would attack after the summer When Russian Troops would have hard time getting through Roki Tunnel.

the first Military roads were Built Over the Caucasus in 1800s for horsemen, and in soviet era improved for Tanks. The famous Roki tunnel was completed only 1985. If Georgia had obtained the independence only decade ago this conflict would be nonexistent.
