Why is genius confused with mental illness? Seems odd. Most geniuses are endowed with absolute rationality. I know. I work in a lab where there are many who belong to MENSA and possess 'genius' qualities. Not one is mentally ill, 'challenged' or takes any medications. My sister is 'mentally challenged' but has an incredible penchant for vocabulary. That doesn't make her a genius no more than Daniel Johnston's musical ability. I found your term of genius a complete misnomer. Not common. I know.

when feelings are translated directly into music, without any societal screen, or production they come out raw and strange. his lack of technical ability is made up for by pure soul. the blues are a very raw music and some of the most soulful. in daniel johnston i see the beginning of something, just as the blues were the beginning of most music we here today. he is just a seperate tangent.

Many ppl praised him because he can write songs and for all his suffering. First, i don't see the troubled life-talent connection. Also, there are others that are FAB writers
singers (Lennon, Carpenter).He CLEARLY can't sing. You have heard great songs before and don't know who wrote them so, if we don't give credit to most writers, why should we praised DJ for doing what others can do even better? He composes basic music also. He is a fair writer, not a genius.

What makes him a genius is how he utilized his troubled life, and his struggles with manic depression. His genius is in his simplicity. In my opinion, and in many of his fans' opinions, there is a lot of beauty to be found in minimalism, and Daniel Dale Johnston had a knack for creating brilliant works of art with what little "skill" he had. Technical skill clearly isn't everything. To say deny Daniel Johnston's genius is to admit to ignorance.

I don't feel any shame in lacking tolerance for ignorance. I even admit it was ignorant of myself to say you knew nothing about him. But there is so much more to a song than the tune, the lyrics, and the voice of the artist. There is also intent, creativity, expression, artistic quality. Tune, lyrics and voice are merely technical guidelines. Innovation comes from disregarding those guidelines. The fact of the matter is, you're out of your element.
