This was interesting to listen to. Sutherland started off nice, smooth, and soothing, and when Callas borke in and started squeaking I felt like covering my ears. I don't get the whole Callas thing...her voice is not pleasant.

zacha, the Callas recording I used is the older one. Its different from the Sutherland, more recent recording. Yet it is possible...Callas could be too much for you to listen to.

Indeed it isn't. It's almost like an acquired taste that you need to keep savouring to enjoy its splendour. But to each his own. However, once you understand the instrument, its limitations and its wonders, you'll come to realise why people, amateur or professionals, begin to appreciate and even admire the "ugly" voice.

lolol Callas was a tall woman! Probabely taller than Joan. Callas had 1,77 metros I believe.

5 foot 7 1/2 inches I read, which would be more like 1.68m. Joan is 1.87m.

Oh yes, she's famous for that. I've seen her on stage many times, and she's very commanding. With that chin she resembles a figurehead on an old-fashioned ship. Supposedly she liked appearing with Pavarotti because he was one of the few tenors who was taller than she was.

You are not histerical or something like this. You are an ordinar human being like me and like others. Human bing is potentially everything: from philosoph to animal. To judge musically, one's nature is one register of this huge "vocal range". Yes, we are among them. Like Callas and Sutherland. But becides their humanity, they had another, this time real vocal range, because of what they are so adroed.

Callas I think Traviata. But Sutherland I think Lucia. That's just the way it is. Each were good but in different operas and in differnt ways. When the MET did their countdown of great broadcast performances, Sutherland's Lucia (late career, too) came in 2nd only to Lyontine Price -- and I can't dispute that. Callas was nowhere to be found because her Tosca was really flawed on the radio broadcast. Still I will always perfer Sutherland in this role.

Technique is very important. Callas and Sutherland were entirely different singers. Callas' vocal technique strained her voice to the point her career ended unlike Sutherland. Callas was a great actress on stange and brought the Bel Canto repertoire back into style.
