What strikes me as most interesting is that the pilots fly this with a fighter-type stick, rather than a yoke, which would be typical for a plane this size.

Well, it's a not a new idea.
Vulcun bombers of the 1950s onwards had them. For fairly manouverable aircraft like these it makes sense, plus having a yoke creates all sorts of problems when you have to eject.

Actually the B-1 was first, not the Tu-160. The B-1A was designed during the 1960's and entered pre-production in the early 1970's after being authorized under the Nixon administration in 1969. The B-1A first flew on December 23, 1974. The Tu-160 program was started in 1972, well after the B-1, and the first Tu-160 flight did not occer until December of 1981, a full seven years after the B-1A's first flight.

I love the size of the Tu-160 over the B-1b. But if both of them should be in a run to save thier lives at low altitude the B-1b would have the clear advantage. The B-1b would be able to fly as fast as a fighter and manoeuvre almost as fast on the deck.And thats where the B-1bs strength lies. The Tu-160 flies twice as fast but at high altitude. Its engines are not made to fly fast at low altitudes like the B-1b and with a bigger size it is less manoeuvrable than the B-1b.

Russia didn't reverse engineer the B-1 other than its basic shape. The TU160 exceeds the B1 in capacity, performance size, and speed. The F-22 is just a leftover cold war project and is hideously expensive, almost too expensive to really use in combat. The F-117 never flew into Russia. The Russians already had doppler radar that defeated the F-117. The first test of the F-117 was in Panama because the USAF knew panama had no real antiaircraft missile capability.

Russia also has strategic bombers that have no American equivalents, mainly because Russia's mission has to be more varied. The USA only cares about long distance bombing, hence they they dumped all bombers other than the B-1 and B-52.

Who really cares if this plane is better than the B-1? Russia only has like 25 of them.. There's a reason we have so many photo's of these things being escorted out of our airspace. That's because they are easy to spot, and I assume just as easy to shoot down. It's a useless plane.

They don't take any precautions to avoid being spotted. They purposely fly out to be intercepted. It is simply to let the "enemy" know that they are capable of conducting such flights.
If anything, the Russians would load these planes up with supersonic cruise missiles that could be launched hundreds (or even thousands) of kilometres away from their intended targets.

Yes, and if you're going to use it for this purpose, there really aren't any differences from the B-1. The fact that it might be faster, or carry a slightly larger payload doesn't matter so much when you're using it as a cruise missile platform. An old B-52 or tu-95 can be used as a cruise missile platform, which is why this plane is useless.

Once F-117 will enter the Russian airspace, the only thing that's gonna be left of them is tiny peices. It's also very unlikely that the pilots will survive, because now the Russian air defence is based on the S-300 systems which always hit the front part of the aircraft.
