Opposite the Kronprinzenpalais, Unter den Linden, Berlin, this man is playing a glass harmonica, which is a collection of wine glasses with varying amounts of water in them. With his finger he rubs the rims of the glasses to produce a different note with each glass. The music is beautiful and oth
er-worldly.

When it rains, does the whole thing get higher in pitch? :) It looks like it's pretty damp.

Actually it gets lower in pitch. But, as the glasses aren't all the same format, the whole thing won't get lower proportionally.

Beatiful music! But that actually isn't called glass harmonica. Glass harmonica is that other instrument, invented by Benjamin Franklin. This is the glass harp, or just the "glasses".

Oh- I would have thought that when the water rises in the glasses, the pitch goes up. Is it the opposite of blowing across a bottle?
I do not know ... ( 1 year ago by Felipeooo)
I do not know deeply the principles that govern this, but it is really the opposite of blowing on bottles. I think its because when you blow across a bottle, what vibrates is the air inside it, and the longer the air column is, the longer are the wavelenghts, and the lower are the frequencies. Adding water makes the frequency higher because you get a shorter column.

But in the case of the wine glass, what vibrates is both the glass and the water, but not the air. I think that something similar happens in this case, but instead of the frequency getting lower when the column of air is lengthened, it gets lower when the column of water gets longer. (I may be wrong though.)

Close... The resonant frequency of a driven system goes as 1/Sqrt(m) (as the inverse of the square root of the mass). Thus, as you increase the mass being driven, the resonant frequency goes down, causing the pitch to get lower.

It's not a Glass Harmonica, but it's pretty darn awesome. That guy's really cool - he must be pretty patient to fill all the glasses to *just* the right amount. I want to learn how to play a real Glass Armonica one. It's on my list of 'weird instruments I'd love to play', next to the Zither and the Theremin.

that's not a glass harmonica, it's a glass harp, or musical glasses.
