Mind-blowing videos, man! Dolphy is a true hero of mine and an undeniable inspiration, he died far, far too young and I hope he's resting peacefully - unless of course he prefers the sounds of jazz accompanying him in his eternal slumber. =)

anyone know anything about that particular signature Dolphy lick? Like, I know that he liked to snag a pop tune motif here and there like... Pop-goes-the-weasel for example but there is a thing he does at 0:24 and 1:33 in this vid that I have heard him play on records. Is it a Dolphyism or something picked up elsewhere? Miles is great but I just can't buy what he says about Dolphy. Dolphy is much more inspirational to me.

Dolphy was a technical master and could play an infinite variety of arpeggios up and down his instruments using all the more common and less-common scales and chords. However, he favored higher chord extensions like 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. That "lick" you identified correctly as one he often used, is just an arpeggio that jumps up a large interval and then descends. I'm not sure if it's a 9th or an 11th, or if it's augmented or diminished but I'll try to dope it out and get back to you.

Booker to me was as great as Coltrane, Rollins and Griffin. One of the GIANTS and so very underrrated. And Dolphy just kills me! The ultra-serious critics always missed the sense of humor and sense of fun in his playing. His playing just makes me feel good in an way that no other alto can come close to. In fact, Dolphy and Desmond are my favorite alto players because of this humor thing and the element of suprise in their playing. RIP, guys. God bless.
