The duet is often attributed to Gioachino Rossini. In fact, it was not written by him, but is an 1825 compilation which includes some music from his 1816 opera, Otello. The compiler appears to have been the English composer Robert Lucas de Pearsall, who for this purpose used the pseudonym "G. Berthold" (from Wikipedia)

Geschreven door Rossini, als herinnering van zijn studententijd. Hij had een hostess die er niet van hield dat hij laat thuis kwam. Hij had afgesproken met zijn huisgenoot dat hij een kat na zou doen als hij thuis was en de deur open moest, zodat de hostess het niet zou merken dat hij weer eens tot laat de hort op was. Zo is het kattenduet (duetto buffo di due gatti) ontstaan. Ik moet zeggen dat dit toch, ondanks hilarisch, een briljant stuk is.
